Okavango Delta, Maun, North-West District, Botswana
A mokoro is the traditional dugout canoe of the Bayei people, the iconic, eco-friendly way to explore the Okavango Delta—the world’s largest inland delta (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in northern Botswana. Poled by a local guide (poler), these narrow, shallow‑draft canoes glide silently through winding reed‑lined channels, lagoons, and floodplains, offering an intimate, eye‑level wildlife experience unavailable by motorboat or 4×4. Modern mokoros are often fiberglass (sustainable alternative to traditional hardwood carvings) but retain the timeless, tranquil spirit of this ancient transport.
